FAQs
Newcastle is a haven of creativity – come rain or shine, you’ll never be stuck for something to do. Ouseburn is one of Newcastle’s cultural hubs – with great pubs, bars and restaurants, it’s the place to be on a Saturday afternoon and great for a pub crawl. Once a flour mill, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art is definitely worth a visit if you’re into your art – a really cool spot. The Biscuit Factory is another favourite with locals and visitors alike – take in a range of contemporary art before sitting down for great food on their outdoor terrace. If you’re a fan of the great outdoors, there’s lots for you to get up to. Our recommendation? Head to Ice-Dip Social in the winter months – a freezing cold plunge into the North Sea, followed by a sauna and food. What better way to warm up?
Despite being located on opposite ends of England, you can get to London from Newcastle faster than you might expect. Hop on a train at Newcastle station, and you’ll be in London’s King Cross in around three hours for as little at £30.85 with a railcard.
Newcastle has a diverse range of cultural activities, including free museums and art galleries, a lively music scene and incredible theatre experiences. From its ship building and mining heritage, Newcastle is known for being the business and social hub of the North East. Something the city is known for is its nightlife – often described as the location of some of England’s most popular nightclubs. And to top it off, the Geordies are famous for being some of the most fun and friendly people around. They’re known for loving life and having a great sense of humour.

Newcastle is the ideal spot for a trip to the seaside. The North East coastline has some of the UK’s finest beaches, offering something for everybody. Popular spots include Longsands beach in Tynemouth, just a 9 mile drive from Newcastle; Whitley Bay is just over 20 minutes away and one of the area’s quieter spots; and just 30 minutes north of Newcastle is Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, a very popular seaside town when the sun is shining.
From casual drinks to big nights out, Newcastle has a lot to offer in terms of nightlife. Like anywhere, your night out will be as expensive as you make it. The city has a huge variety of places, with the likes of The Quayside Wetherspoons, Slug and Lettuce, Bijoux, Sinners, and Greys Club offering cheaper options; and Lola Jeans, WC Newcastle and Chinawhite sitting on the more exclusive and therefore expensive end of the scale.
There are two Vita Student buildings to choose from in Newcastle – Westgate and Strawberry Place. Both are in the heart of the action, surrounded by an incredible choice of restaurants and cafes. Near Westgate you’ll find Pinocchio, an upbeat Italian eatery with classic dishes and meal deals; Zapatista, offering tasty Mexican food with great healthy options available too; and Teayempo, a South Asian restaurant with reasonably priced food full of flavour. If you’re looking for a bite to eat near Strawberry Place, Chilli Padi offers classic Pan-Asian and Malaysian dishes like curries and noodles; The Real Greek is a slick, modern restaurant with a menu full of classic Greek dishes; and Thali Tray offers a selection of Indian street food with 10 beers on tap.
You’ll be spoiled for choice when looking for the best area to live in as a Newcastle student. To be right in the middle of the action, you’ll want to live in the city centre for easy access to a host of clubs, restaurants and bars and both universities just around the corner. Sandyford is a popular area for students who want to be close to the energy of the city, whilst still having some breathing space. If you want more affordable accommodation which is still close to the city centre, Jesmond is the perfect balance and another student hotspot. And if you’re looking for a bargain student spot, Heaton might be the answer. With supermarkets, shops, restaurants and pubs, you’ll have everything you need just around the corner.
